Hi all
I just bought a new iMac 3.4 ghz model and need to upgrade the RAM. Right now it comes with two slots filled with 2 x 4 gig sticks for a total of 8 gigs. I'm looking at adding in 2 x 8 gig sticks along with the two 4 gig sticks for a total of 24 gigs of RAM. Apple's new 2017 iMacs can support up to 64GB of RAM, but that's not the whole story. Here's a look at the still perplexing iMac RAM upgrades.
Mac Specs By Capability Actual Maximum RAM iMac Models. The actual maximum RAM of each iMac is listed below along with its compatible RAM type, default amount of RAM pre-installed, common identifiers suitable to identify a iMac in order to determine its RAM capacity, and more. The 27-inch iMacs are a different story. While each year we fear that Apple will take away the ability for user upgrades, the 2017 iMacs thankfully retain the four user accessible RAM slots. The new iMacs ship with 8GB of 2400MHz DDR4 memory (2x4GB) in the default configuration. One DDR2 SDRAM installed into the top slot: iMac (17-inch Late 2006 CD) 512 MB: Two 256 MB DIMMs; one in each of the memory slots: iMac (Mid 2006) 512 MB: One DDR2 SDRAM installed into the top slot: iMac (Early 2006) Maximum memory: 4 GB: 2 GB SO-DIMM in each of the two slots. iMac (Late 2006) 2 GB: 1 GB SO-DIMM in each of the two slots: iMac.
I have just purchased an core i7 2017 iMac 27' which came with the standard 8GB RAM - This came configured with 2 x 4GB cards, occupying slots 1 and 3
I then added my additional 2 x Crucial 16GB cards in the remaining slots 2 and 4 but the machine would not boot up.
I then moved the original 4GB cards to slots 1 and 2 and placed the 2 x Crucial 16GB cards to slots 3 and 4 and it booted up

Questions - Why did it not work like all the literature and YouTube videos told me to configure it and is my system going to work in the best way with this configuration?
Thansk for any thoughts/comments
